Josh Smith has worked a term instructor and as a term assistant professor in the Robertson School's since 2015. Selected in a national search this spring, he will switch to a new position as a tenure-eligible assistant professor in the School this fall semester. He will also serve as the School's Director of Communications.

Sitting on the floor in a circle with other kids. Mothers hanging out in the back. And at the front, someone energetically reading a book, complete with waving arms and funny voices. It’s one of those great memories from childhood: storytime at the library. When the pandemic shut them all down this past March, Robin Bajkiewicz, a children’s programming specialist at the Atlee branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library, wondered how storytime could continue.

The highly competitive award, funded by the US-UK Fulbright Commission, enables outstanding U.S. students to participate in three- or four-week programs at prestigious universities throughout the United Kingdom.

Virtual advertising ‘summer camp’ offers hands-on experiences and professional connections

Virtual summer camp has its pluses and minuses. On the negative side, campers don’t get to roast marshmallows over an outdoor fire pit. On the plus side, they don’t have to fend off mosquitoes or worry about poison ivy. Another plus for students participating in Camp ADventure — a new program created by students in Virginia Commonwealth University’s Ad Club — is that they get to create concepts and campaign materials for a well-known international nonprofit. And they get to do it during a pandemic when many of them have had to forfeit their original summer plans for internships and summer jobs.


‘Everyone at the table’: VCU media lab works to improve health communications

Jeanine Guidry, Ph.D., an assistant professor of public relations in the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture in the College of Humanities and Sciences, believes health communications should be multidisciplinary. She helped create the Media+Health Lab to advance that vision. The lab’s goal is to study health communications and present research on best practices.

Virginia Commonwealth University broadcast journalism students in the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture’s documentary capstone course normally work all semester to produce short documentaries, which are then broadcast on Richmond public television station VPM as part of a show called “VCU InDepth.”
