Communications and Media Based Internship Opportunity

Department of African American Studies – Virginia Commonwealth University

The Department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a dynamic and creative Communications/Media Intern to support public relations, marketing, and social media initiatives. This position offers hands-on experience in digital communications while promoting the department’s academic programs, research, and community engagement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement public relations and marketing strategies to highlight departmental events and initiatives.
• Manage, create, and schedule content for the department’s social media platforms.
• Assist in the design of digital and print marketing materials.
• Capture photos and video content to document events and produce short promotional materials.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to feature departmental achievements and programs.
• Maintain and update communication channels, including newsletters and website content.
• Support the planning and promotion of special events and community outreach activities.

 

Qualifications:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn) and basic analytics.
• Familiarity with digital content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate with a diverse academic community.
• Interest in African American Studies and cultural programming is a plus.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Video editing skills and experience producing short digital content.
• Photography and/or film production experience for capturing events and creating promotional materials.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.).
