Position: Journalist Volunteer
Reports to: Amber Lancaster, Executive Director

Position Summary: The Journalist Volunteer will support Start 1 Spark’s mission by writing original content for a range of communication purposes. The position will support the Executive Director in developing on-brand written content for monthly donor communications. The Volunteer will interview students and staff at Start 1 Spark’s partner schools, volunteers, and Start 1 Spark staff to create heart-felt stories about the impact the nonprofit makes in the Richmond region. The impact pieces will engage existing and new audiences on our email communication, website, and social media platforms. The ideal candidate for this role must be organized, out-going, and inquisitive with a desire to highlight Start 1 Spark’s impact.

Start 1 Spark’s mission is to provide students in need with the means to participate in their school’s extracurricular activities. Utilizing the power of storytelling, the Journalist Volunteer will be a valuable team member who builds our relationship and credibility with donors and supporters. This is an exciting opportunity for the Journalist Volunteer to gain real world experience applying learned communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Draft heartwarming content to convey the impact donors and supporters have on our students
● Ensure all copy and content is on-brand and consistent in terms of style, quality, and tone of voice, and optimized for user experience and engagement
● Brainstorm potential story topics and ideas
● Schedule and conduct interviews with students, school staff, and volunteers
● Coordinate photography and video with Start 1 Spark’s respective volunteers

Requirements:
● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proofreading and sharp eye for detail and sense of what types of creativity will be effective
● Work in a collaborative environment and share ideas and critiques respectfully
● Must present a professional appearance and friendly manner
● Ability to balance multiple priorities and consistently deliver copy under tight deadlines
● Respect and maintain the confidentiality of Start 1 Spark’s donors and partner school students and staff

Time Commitment: 6-10 hours per month
