Position: Creative Writer 

Reports to: Amber Lancaster, Executive Director

Position Summary: The Creative Writer Volunteer will support Start 1 Spark’s mission by writing original content for a range of communication purposes. The position will support the Executive Director in developing the blurbs for our Monthly Spark program and donor communications that features how extracurriculars have positively impacted a student’s life. The Creative Writer will also draft content to support Board members in their outreach goals to include email messages and social media content. The ideal candidate for this role must be organized, creative, and a passionate learner who is excited to grow Start 1 Spark’s audience.

Start 1 Spark’s mission is to provide students in need with the means to participate in their school’s extracurricular activities. Utilizing multiple communication platforms, the Creative Writer Volunteer will be a valuable team member who builds our relationship with donors and supporters. This is an exciting opportunity for the Creative Writer Volunteer to gain real world experience applying learned communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Generate and edit written content that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action
• Ensure all copy and content is on-brand and consistent in terms of style, quality, and tone of voice, and optimized for user experience and engagement
• Draft the Monthly Spark content based on interview notes
• Create marketing and outreach content to support various short-term outreach initiatives 

Requirements:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proofreading and sharp eye for detail and sense of what types of creativity will be effective
• Work in a collaborative environment and share ideas and critiques respectfully
• Ability to balance multiple priorities and consistently deliver concepts and copy under tight deadlines
• Respect and maintain the confidentiality of Start 1 Spark’s donors and partner school students and staff

Time Commitment: 4-6 hours per month
