Internship Title: Communication & Development Intern
Location: Hybrid; need to be in person more in the beginning and then transition to 50/50 in office and remote.
Hours: Flexible; ideally 5-10 hours per week
Compensation: Unpaid; course credit if available
About Us:
The Free Clinic of Powhatan provides medical, dental, behavioral health, and nutrition services to uninsured adults in Powhatan, Cumberland, Amelia, and Chesterfield counties. We are a small but high-impact nonprofit where interns can truly make a difference—and leave with real portfolio content and skills.
Internship Summary:
This internship is ideal for a student interested in communications, public relations, nonprofit development, or community health. The intern will work directly with the Annual Giving Manager on a variety of storytelling, outreach, and donor engagement projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft social media content and assist with scheduling (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Write donor-facing communications such as email newsletters, blog posts, and thank-you messages
- Help prepare event sponsorship materials and assist with sponsor outreach
- Draft or research short media pitches and update media lists
- Assist with donor acknowledgment and stewardship efforts (calls, letters, social recognition)
- Assist with donor database management
- Optional: Attend special events or help gather photo/video content if schedule allows
Desired Skills:
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Interest in nonprofit communications or development
- Familiarity with social media platforms and Canva (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Organized, collaborative, and eager to learn
- Graphic design and photography experience is a plus but not required
