MARKETING INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Requirements

Student interns do not need to have prior experience, but it is preferred.. 

We encourage students to be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at VCU

Desirable skills include time management, self-discipline, strong written and verbal communication, 

and a passion for campus life & athletics. 

 

Intern Responsibilities

Student interns are responsible for working on all assigned VCU Athletics events, on-campus tabling/community events, periodic meetings, and other duties as assigned. Interns will assist with promotions, including promotional development, preparation, and administration; assist with student activities; assist with the distribution of marketing materials within the surrounding community, 

and assist in the daily operational activities of a marketing department.

Typical time requirements are, on average, 1-2 events per week, depending on the time of year and varying in length. Those eligible for work study cannot exceed 10 hours in a week. 

 

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Game day responsibilities at VCU Athletics events in the Fall & Spring semesters, as well as school breaks
  • Early arrival for pre-game preparation 
  • Event set-up at the stadium/arena/venue 
  • In-game execution, including on-field/court presentations, fan engagement, managing marketing tables, and customer service. 
  • Post-game/event tear-down and clean-up
  • Attend periodic mandatory meetings throughout the school year 
  • Distribution of promotional materials; Grassroots marketing throughout campus and community 
  • Represent Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU Athletics brand in a respectful and positive manner on campus, in the community, and online
  • Function as a team player - network with your fellow interns, work together to achieve goals, and lend support and help when needed. 

Additionally, a select number of interns have already been selected to work in the office in 2025-26. On average, each office intern will be responsible for working 3-6 hours weekly in the Marketing Office. 

Office Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Project management, as assigned by the Marketing Staff 
  • Assist with group sales initiatives for select sports
  • Database management 
  • Conduct research to help in developing marketing and promotion plans, giveaways, social media, etc. 
  • Maintain organization and tidiness of Marketing storage areas 
  • Grassroots marketing throughout campus and the community
  • Preparation for upcoming sporting events or season

This position is currently unpaid. However, if you qualify for Federal Work Study, you possibly can be hired as a FWS Intern and earn compensation
