Graduate Studies Alumni Michael Ivey

Name: Michael Ivey
Degrees: M.S. in Mass Communications from VCU, 2022; Integrated Communication

When did you graduate from the Robertson School's M.S. in Mass Communications and what was your concentration?

I graduated from the Robertson School with my Master's in Integrated Communications in December 2022. I decided to return to VCU two decades after earning my BS in Mass Communications – Advertising Creative track. Needless to say, quite a bit has changed!

What is your current role in the industry?

I am the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Greater Richmond Partnership, a local non-profit that helps attract companies to the region. Companies such as the LEGO Group, the CoStar Group, SimpliSafe and Stone Brewing.

What influenced your decision to attend the graduate program?

I had considered the Strategic Public Relations program for several years but postponed due to work and family obligations. But I’m glad that I waited as the program underwent a transformation during the pandemic and became more attainable with its asymmetrical and online approach. For a working father such as myself, I could pursue my Masters in four straight semesters instead of one or two classes at a time.

What about the program did you find most useful in your current career?

My position at GRP requires an integrated communications approach so the program is very much aligned with my previously attained skillset. However, the formal training was valuable as was the peer evaluation and “hive mind” behind our cohort.

What are you most proud of from your graduate school experience?

I was able to successfully balance work-life-school and earn a perfect GPA.
