Fall 2026: Global Surgical Expedition - Program Coordination Intern
Global Surgical Expedition is a 501c3 NGO founded in 2012 with the vision to help improve access to surgical care and build surgical infrastructure in underserved regions. Our global mission involves 4 pillars focused on improving surgical care worldwide: providing surgeries and surgical infrastructure, education, research, and advocacy. Our surgical and health care teams presently perform short-term surgical trips, providing care across Central America and Africa. Our education effort centers on our goal to foster the next generation of global surgery leaders by organizing international training experiences as well as developing formal classroom curricula and training programs for students and medical residents. We also perform global research to understand better ways to reach patients and provide surgery that makes an impact. Our advocacy efforts include public awareness campaigns as well as larger advocacy activities aimed at policy change regarding global surgery.
GSE is a growing organization and the work you do will be critical to our success and have a significant impact to may around the world in need. You will work directly with GSE’s leadership team to accomplish a wide array of responsibilities and be involved in activities across program development and communications. Responsibilities include:
Program Coordination
- Coordinate surgical trip efforts in conjunction with in-country program coordinators and provide support for volunteer staff.
- Develop informational resources for health care providers, including cultural education, travel policies, vaccination schedule, etc.
- Create press releases and other public media outreach regarding organization efforts.
- Oversee surgical equipment inventory and work with surgical team leaders to prepare and ship equipment needed for surgical trips.
- Develop and organize health care educational programs for students.
- Oversee the content creation of the annual impact report.
- Develop and coordinate fundraising efforts in conjunction with GSE director of development.
- Participate in grant solicitation efforts.
- Provide high-level administrative support to the executive director.
Communications
- Assist leadership team to develop and execute on an overall plan and strategy to maintain a robust year-round calendar that engages multiple audiences from donors to patients to partners.
- Assist with the executes regular social media, print, and video-driven marketing campaigns to advance organization awareness and initiatives.
- Develops and oversees development of agency collateral designed to communicate brand identity and effectiveness, such as printed annual impact report, event invitations, sponsorship packets, website, and other video-based, cross-generational needs. Photo and video editing proficiency.
This is an unpaid internship
Weekly time commitment: 10-20 hours with flexible schedule
Location: Remote with some in-person meetings in the Richmond, VA area
The ideal candidate brings with them an excitement to change to world and be part of an organization that seeks to do the same. A familiarity with various Microsoft platforms is helpful (Outlook, Sharepoint, Powerpoint, Excel).
