Apr 9, 2021

Posted in: Internships & scholarships, Journalism internships

The Virginia Mercury, a nonprofit, online news organization covering Virginia government and politics, is seeking a paid summer intern to work out of its office in Richmond.

From the governor's office and state agencies to the capital's boards, commissions and legislative meetings, you'll get a chance to gain statehouse experience while working alongside our team of veteran journalists, which includes four reporters covering everything from politics and criminal justice to energy and health care policy. Since almost every year in Virginia is an election year, you'll also help us cover the runup to the gubernatorial and House of Delegates' elections.

You'll write on topics determined in consultation with the editor, and will end the internship with a portfolio of published news articles. You'll assist Mercury staff with production of our daily email newsletter, sharing content on our social media accounts and providing content for the outlet’s dynamic blog. This is an excellent and challenging opportunity designed for college students or recent grads who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism.

The Virginia Mercury is part of States Newsroom, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by grants and a coalition of donors and readers. The Virginia Mercury is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value a diverse workforce and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or disability.
