Organization Name:  Virginia Holistic Justice Initiative (Non-Profit)

Summer Internship Title:  Founding Operational Assistant - Virginia Holistic Justice Initiative

Organization & Summer Internship Description:  The Virginia Holistic Justice Initiative (VAHJI) is an emerging non-profit organizing for criminal justice reform and launching in the summer of 2019 in Richmond, VA.  VAHJI aims to provide holistic defense services to clients charged with criminal offenses in the City of Richmond in partnership with the Richmond Public Defender's Office.  VAHJI will also publicly campaign for an end to non-violent incarceration in Virginia, by collecting, analyzing, and publicizing client stories and recidivism data to raise public consciousness around why crime happens in Richmond -- and why incarceration for non-violent offenders is often ineffective.  Exemplar, analogous organizations include the Bronx Defenders and the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office.  VAHJI's governing board, pro-bono counsel with Williams Mullen, and partnership with the Richmond Public Defender have been secured.  Two (2) Founding Operational Assistant summer interns will leverage these resources to service VAHJI’s initial clients and use these client experiences to develop VAHJI's initial operating procedures, under the supervision of VAHJI's two founding attorneys:  (1) Tom Barbour, a UVA Law/Darden alum, former Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Richmond, and private defense attorney; and (2) Jerald Hess, Supervising Assistant Public Defender for the City of Richmond.  This opportunity is best for students interested in obtaining exposure and experience in public service, generally, or specifically in the fields of media relations, startups, criminal justice, social work, non-profit management, non-profit fundraising.

Additional Operational Details:  In addition to the (2) Founding Operational Assistants referred to in this posting, VAHJI’s summer team will be composed of a total of (4) interns from a variety of disciplines — including at least one JD and one MBA.  The team will work together out of a co-working office space in Richmond and under the supervision of VAHJI’s founding attorneys and will aim to start-up, operate, and fundraise for VAHJI — with the goal of launching publicly in the fall.  This posting is an opportunity for students to learn how to build a non-profit from the ground up.
