Summary Statement


The AARP Virginia state office is looking for a strong undergraduate intern to join its communications team for the calendar year 2019 (May 1, 2019-Dec. 31, 2019). This is a great opportunity for our ideal intern to develop solid work experience interning for the largest social mission organization in the country, while contributing to projects that impact our members who are 50 and older.  You must be available at least 25 hours per week, and available to stay at the office for at least 4 hours at a time and must be able to be in the office by 9 a.m. on a Monday or a Tuesday.  As an AARP intern, you may be asked to participate in local events throughout Virginia and will be reimbursed for travel.  The office is conveniently located in downtown Richmond.




The intern will be directed by the Associate State Director for Communications and will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter engagement, and other local initiatives.  In this role, the intern will help staff communicate with AARP members, media and the public, focusing on digital media channels. You will develop content for the state office webpage, social media sites, member emails and e-newsletters with a focus on video.  You also will prepare and distribute news releases and make media calls.the intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects.  The intern will work directly with the Associate State Director for Communications to complete tasks related to dashboard goals. 




Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; be in good academic standing; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors. AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program. 

Additional Requirements:

Experience editing photos and video is required. Proficiency with imovie, animoto, or adobe premiere preferred. This position will work directly with volunteers who are older adults, and will provide support for volunteer trainings on technical topics such as taking photos and videos with a smartphone, how to use facebook and twitter, etc.

Candidates must be self-motivated, collaborative, be able to learn quickly, have strong writing skills with appropriate use of spelling and punctuation, and take directions well.  Must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding editorial content under the supervision of the associate state director.
