Spring 2020: Henrico Citizen - Journalism Intern

Dec 11, 2019

Posted in: Internships & scholarships, Journalism internships

The Henrico Citizen offers unpaid internships year-round for aspiring journalists, copy editors and photojournalists. Applicants should be current journalism or communications students with some experience writing journalistically and a strong interest in learning more about the industry through the prism of a small community news organization.
The Henrico Citizen is Henrico County's award-winning, hometown news source, published twice monthly in print (circulation of 35,000 monthly) and daily online at
We seek interns who are curious by nature, have a strong grasp of writing style and enjoy telling the stories of people in the community, whether through word or image – or both. Interns should possess strong writing and interviewing skills and have a desire to improve those skills through the internship. Qualified applicants should be willing and able to commit roughly 10-25 hours per week to the internship, though specific days and hours can vary on an individual basis.
We welcome applicants who are seeking course credit for an internship and those who simply would like to gain experience in the field. Our interns may: attend and report about events, meetings and community activities; write hard news, feature, entertainment and sports articles; assist with copy editing and proofing; take photos and/or videos; conduct research for longer-term projects; receive bylines for all work published in print or online; develop and suggest story ideas; assist with special sections and/or our three annual magazines; work on other long-term projects; and more. Internships are flexible and may be tailored around a student's schedule.
The Henrico Citizen is located just north of downtown Richmond in Lakeside.
