Posted in: Advertising internships, Internships & scholarships, Journalism internships, Public Relations internships
Description: The copy editor edits every story published online and in the weekly print edition for AP Style, grammar and punctuation. Additionally, the copy editor is responsible for fact-checking every story and ensuring all names are spelled correctly. While some content editing is permissible, the primary responsibility of the copy editor is to ensure stories are mechanically-sound and accurate. Time commitment varies week-to-week, but presence at every Sunday production starting at 1 p.m. and ending in the evening is mandatory. You should also have availability on Mondays and Tuesdays to spend several hours at the Student Media Center, especially on Tuesday nights when the paper is sent off. Attendance at weekly staff budget meetings, which occur Mondays at 8:30 p.m., is required.
Overall, the copy editor should be extremely detail-oriented, focused and adept in AP Style. Pay is $72.50 per two-week pay period. Preference will be given to candidates who have previously contributed writing to the CT.
Application process: Submit two writing samples published online or in print and a resume detailing relevant experience. Once we have received your writing samples and resume, we will contact you if we wish to schedule an interview and proctored editing test, in which you will edit a story for grammar, AP Style and accuracy. You will have access to the online AP Stylebook and Google, which you may use to fact-check and verify spelling. Please let us know if you will not have access to a laptop to take this test.
