Spring 2018: Urban Views RVA - Journalist

accomplishments of the African American community of Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding region. We strive to raise the profiles of the many people who make Richmond a vibrant community. Urban Views has published a print product weekly for the last ten years that was distributed throughout the Greater Richmond area. We have ended the printed product and are now 100% online.

Summary of Position
The lifestyle reporter finds and develops stories about people, trends and events that
illuminate life in Richmond area. Areas of focus include leisure pursuits, personal finance,
personal health and well-being and social interactions. The reporter writes for digital and
social media.

REPORTING
Find story ideas by getting out into the community, meeting people and hearing the stories
they have to tell. Gather information, conduct interviews and accurately document sources
and contact information.

WRITING
Shape fresh, current, accurate pieces for a young adult audience. Bring a clear, inviting
voice to items of various lengths and formats – from 400-word articles to Tweets, and “man
on the street” interview captions.

Qualifications
Excellent grammar, writing, editing, presentation and verbal communication skills.
Experience with advanced social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram).

Requirement
Available to work flexible schedules, including weekends, to cover assigned events.

Compensation
Unpaid. Able to earn course credit hours consistent with college’s standards.
