Virginia Department of Health Professions Seeks Communications Intern

Gain hands on media and public relations experience with healthcare regulatory agency  


The Communications Unit of the Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) is interviewing candidates from the VCU School of Mass Communications for an eight to ten-hour a week internship to total 100 hours from January through May 2017.  There is an option to renew following completion of this engagement. Interns will receive academic credit hours to be arranged through the School.

Candidates will have strong writing skills, an interest in healthcare related communications and a demonstrated appreciation for the dissemination of governmental statistical information to the public and other stakeholder groups, including the news media.  Additionally, candidates must have experience with various software including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and web development platforms.  Internet access, a telephone and computer are provided.

Two three-paragraph writing samples, a resume and an in-person interview are requested.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of communications staff located in DHP’s Office of the Director at the Perimeter Center Building, Suite 300 at 9960 Mayland Drive, Henrico, approximately 15 miles and a 20 minute car ride from campus. Assignments will be made based on an 18-month implementation plan and will be issued twice monthly. Telephone and one-on-one meetings with the DHP Director of Communication and Communications Associate will be convened to provide guidance and feedback on projects.

This opportunity is a portfolio builder for a future communications executive with assignments that can be completed off-site. Online work includes: drafting media materials such as press releases and talking points; drafting online copy; conducting research such as media list development and story placement ideas; and drafting outreach correspondence. Select projects including implementation of media and other special events will take place on site at DHP.
