Description of Organization

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts) has helped adults and children explore their creativity and make art since 1963. Each year, the organization touches the lives of more than 40,000 people through its classes, exhibitions, community outreach programs, camps, workshops and special events.

Each year, VisArts offers more than 1,000 visual and creative arts classes in clay, wood, fiber, painting, photography, printmaking, glass, metal, drawing, writing, decorative arts and other visual media. More than 125 instructors teach for the organization.

Intern Responsibilities

Internships at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond show students what it’s like to work for a not-for-profit arts center. Interns must be at least 21 years old and are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Experiences are unpaid but can be completed for academic credit. All interns may take one art class at VisArts, free of charge.

Assist the Special Events Coordinator and Director of Development in the organization and execution of Craft + Design, a nationally recognized art show that hosts 150 artists in 3D mediums. The event sees 10,000+ attendees over the course of one weekend and is an incredibly important time for the organization. Interns will keep a master planning document updated at all times with accepted and waitlisted art, maintain all vendor paperwork (health permits, signed license agreements, etc.), pitch corporate partnerships for C+D, create the floorplan of the show with the Special Events Coordinator, attend committee meetings with 30+ influential Richmonders each month, keep track of all income/expense reports, and numerous other tasks that go along with planning an event of this size.

Assist the Special Events Coordinator in the organization and execution of Art Junction: Chili Throwdown, a beloved fan-district event that serves as a fundraiser for VisArts’ Clay Studios. Interns will help pitch restaurants in the Richmond-metro area, organize sponsorships, create event timeline + volunteer plan, assist with marketing documents and social media campaigns, etc.

Interns will also assist the development department with annual appeals, save the date/invitation mailings and other mailings as needed.

This is an incredible opportunity to see what it takes to run special events for a large non-profit arts organization!
