Fall 2017: Urban Views Weekly - Journalist

Urban Views Weekly celebrates and explores the lives, work, achievements, and leisure accomplishments of the African American community of Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding region. We strive to raise the profiles of the many people who make Richmond a vibrant community. Urban Views publishes a print product each week and is distributed throughout the Greater Richmond area. Our website features extended content and we are working to grow our Social Media engagement.

Summary of Position

The lifestyle reporter finds and develops stories about people, trends and events that illuminate life in Richmond City and the Eastern Henrico area. Areas of focus include leisure pursuits, personal finance, personal health and well-being and social interactions. The reporter writes for print, digital and social media.


Find story ideas by getting out into the community, meeting people and hearing the stories they have to tell. Gather information, conduct interviews and accurately document sources and contact information.


Shape fresh, current, accurate pieces for a young adult audience. Bring a clear, inviting voice to items of various lengths and formats – from 400-word print articles to Tweets, and “man on the street” interview captions.


Excellent grammar, writing, editing, presentation and verbal communication skills. Experience with advanced social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram). Requirement Available to work flexible schedules, including weekends, to cover assigned events.


Unpaid. Able to earn course credit hours consistent with college’s standards.
