Fall 2017: Hostelling International Richmond - Engagement Intern

Hostelling International Richmond (HI Richmond), part of the HI USA network, seeks a fall 2017 volunteer. HI USA is a national educational non-profit with over 58 locations in the USA, and nearly 4,000 internationally. Our mission is to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. We believe that a deeper understanding of people, places, and cultures, makes for a more tolerant world.

Volunteer position description: this individual will spend half their time working on HI Richmond Engagement projects, and half their time working on the Living Guest Book project, a collaboration with WCVE.

50% HI Richmond Engagement
+ lead one in-hostel activity per week
+ lead one hostel excursion per month
+ research and create materials and experiences to enhance hostel guests' experience in Richmond and at HI Richmond
+ assist with large-scale hostel events
+ assist with projects involving community partners
+ assist with community outreach efforts
+ other duties as assigned

50% Manage the Living Guest Book project
(Living Guest Book is a collaboration with WCVE, Richmond NPR/PBS affiliate station. This audio and digital project seeks
to record and document the stories of hostel guests and their visits in Richmond)
+ complete training with WCVE staff on audio equipment and interview techniques and portrait photography
+ create and implement a plan to recruit interested hostel guests
+ interview, record, and photograph interested hostel guests
+ ensure legal/paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner
+ other duties as assigned, including digital editing of audio recordings and photographs

Preferred qualifications
+ excellent communication and social skills
+ high level of comfort with learning new technology
+ strong computer skills and ability to learn new software
+ highly organized and detail oriented
+ hostelling experience a plus!

Time commitment: 10 - 15 hours per week
This volunteer position has the possibility to continue after the fall semester.
