Equally essential to Richmond Ballet’s success is The School of Richmond Ballet, a nationally-recognized training institution education and Minds In Motion, an innovative education and outreach program.

General Job Duties of the Public Relations/Marketing Intern:

  • Lead all promotional events with The Nutcracker promotional cast and be the on-site point person for all events, including the Jefferson Tree Lighting and Grand Illumination at the James Center
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all promotional cast students and their families, including hosting the initial parent/promotional cast meeting in November
  • Communicate with various businesses about promotional events
  • Assist in creating press kits for major events
  • Assisting with social media content creation/Assist with social media metrics and reporting 
  • Media relations research/Dance and Arts News research (ability to prepare weekly briefs if necessary, become familiar with leading dance and arts publications/journals/blogs/writers)
  • Assist with press files and archiving
  • Write copy for distribution among online and local press outlets
  • Perform website updates
  • General office and project support for Marketing Department, including assistance with the company’s six playbill production cycles (archival research and proofing)
  • Other projects as assigned  

Qualifications applicants should possess:

  • Background in public relations or event management
  • Confidence to lead promotional cast at events
  • Must be a self-starter, and show a great ability to take initiative
  • Upbeat and positive in high stress situations
  • Should be prepared to work in a business environment
  • Ability to lead efforts, work alone and as well as a part of a team
  • Interest in dance and the arts a plus
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a plus, as well as familiarity with the Word Press website platform

Internship training includes:

  • Learn the skills to plan promotional events and lead promotional cast at events in Richmond
  • How to build relationships with the media to encourage news coverage
  • Become a member of the marketing team for a successful arts organization
  • Leadership from the Marketing Director


This internship will be offered over the course of the fall semester of 2016, with a start date open to negotiation, although ideally around Oct 1. The internship is unpaid, however can be performed on either a volunteer basis or for college credit when applicable.

Hours are flexible during the week, but certain promotional dates (to be determined in the early fall) must work in the applicants’ calendar.

Applicant must have a vehicle for transportation to local promotional events (there will be a mileage reimbursement for all travel associated with promotional events).
