Fall 2016: ACLU - Graphic Design/Multimedia Intern

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia is a private, non-profit organization that promotes civil liberties and civil rights for everyone in the Commonwealth through public education, litigation and advocacy with the goal of securing freedom and equality for all. We are an affiliate of the national ACLU, with which we share resources and expertise.

Volunteer/Intern Opportunity

The ACLU of Virginia seeks volunteers/interns interested in providing on-going graphic design and/or multimedia services. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in building their portfolio or professionals seeking to assist in the promotion of civil liberties in Virginia.

The ACLU of Virginia has access to the Adobe Creative Suite and prefers to work with files compatible with Adobe Creative Suite 6 (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).

Possible projects include:  Creating images and graphics (.jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp) for social media  Creating images and graphics for print publications (.eps, .jpg)  Enhancing/editing photos for print or web publications  Designing and laying out print publications, preferably using InDesign (such as newsletter, annual report, one-pagers, flyers, handouts)  Designing items for promotional materials, such as buttons, stickers, t-shirts, hats, keychains, etc.  Recording and editing brief videos for posting on YouTube and our website

Qualifications  Excellent oral and written communication and graphic design skills, including expertise with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator;  Experience in marketing, web-publishing, and/or desktop publishing;  A creative, organized and responsible nature;  Multi-tasking skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team;  A self-starter able to meet strict deadlines;  Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of email best practices, social media platforms, and online communications;  Experience with online advocacy campaigns (preferred, but not required);  A commitment to the mission of the ACLU of Virginia.

Commitment/Compensation: We seek volunteers/interns who can be called upon throughout the year to assist us with one-time projects or regularly updated materials. This volunteer/internship is unpaid. Some academic programs allow students to earn credit hours through an ACLU of Virginia internship (inquire about conditions and availability at your school).
