As the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture’s broadcast video engineer, John Geerdes oversees technical aspects for the School and for the College of Humanities and Sciences. Geerdes has been working for VCU since 1992. Today, he is the building manager and emergency evacuation coordinator for the Temple building, home to the School. He also teaches the audio portion of MASC 367 Audio and Video Journalism.

Known as the “chief yeller” by students, Geerdes was a VCU student himself in the 1980’s. Before majoring in mass communications, Geerdes served in the U.S. Navy where he learned about electronics as an Electronics Warfare Technician.  He went on to be the project manager for Battlefield Communications.

Geerdes’ mass communication experience started at the Richmond radio stations WRNL and WMXB, where he was a DJ and live show producer. He also went into television as an ENG engineer at WRIC-TV.

Along the way, Geerdes has worked with the Boy Scouts of America and has also ran sound for numerous bands, as well as working as a DJ at weddings.

In 1977, he married his wife Tracey Geerdes. They have a daughter and a son.
