The Robertson School launched its new Speaker Series on Tuesday evening. Author Emerson Brooking, who co-wrote the book "Like War," talked about "The Weaponization of Social Media" in front of students, faculty and guests from the VCU and Richmond communities. Robertson School Director Dr. Hong Cheng was able to welcome more than 200 guests at the event.

You can watch the video of the event below:

Brooking is a DC-based expert on the relationship between the internet and conflict. He worked as a Research Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations—the youngest researcher in a generation to receive such an appointment. He has served as an adviser on information warfare to the National Security Council, Joint Staff, and U.S. intelligence community.

According to Brooking, "through the weaponization of social media, the internet is changing war and politics, just as war and politics are changing the internet. Terrorists livestream their attacks, 'Twitter wars' produce real‑world casualties, and viral misinformation alters not just the result of battles, but the very fate of nations. The result is that war, tech, and politics have blurred into a new kind of battlespace that plays out on our smartphones."

You can see photos from the event on the Facebook page of the Robertson School.

The next event of the Robertson School Speaker Series will be on March 25 at 5 p.m. in the VCU University Students Commons Theater. The speaker will be Kristen Cavallo, CEO of the Martin Agency. The event will be free and open to the public.
