The VCU Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture held its annual winter commencement ceremony December 9th at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
A total of 127 Robertson School students were conferred Friday at the commencement ceremony. This year’s class was made up of 116 undergraduate degrees in journalism, public relations and advertising, 10 master’s degrees in strategic PR and one Ph.D. from the MATX program. Frazier Armstrong served as the commencement speaker with Montse Fuentes, Ph.D., the new dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences at VCU, giving introductory remarks.
Armstrong’s speech, “Change and Choices,” dealt largely with decisions graduates would be facing as they begin the new chapters of their personal and professional lives. Armstrong told students to prepare for what they wanted most but to be willing to accept something a little different.
“My hope is that you choose to explore, create, and recognize opportunities with a spirit of adventure and risk,” Armstrong told the graduates. “The ability, to adapt, to respond and revel in the many changes that will come your way will not only be your measure of intelligence, it may well be your measure of success.”
Each sequence gave an individual award out to an exemplary student in their given concentration. The recipients for each sequence were:
• Strategic Public Relations (graduate): Sarah Murphy
• Strategic advertising (undergraduate): Lily Galleo
• Creative advertising (undergraduate): Arthur Olivarez
• Broadcast journalism (undergraduate): Cyndi Gordon
• Print-Online journalism (undergraduate): Logan Williams
• Public relations (undergraduate): Shawn Meredith
