Jessica Collins is one of our newest professors in the advertising sequence. She will begin teaching classes this fall as a full-time instructor.
Welcome back to the Robertson School! Tell us a little bit about where you are from and where you worked, or studied, previously?
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, I was the first person in my family to attend college. I double majored in Spanish and Commerce at the University of Virginia and then earned my Master’s of Communications from the VCU Brandcenter.
I spent four years working as a Strategic Planner on the Walmart account at The Martin Agency, touching every piece of the account from grocery to electronics to apparel to overall brand messaging. After that I started a Planning Department at a local Richmond agency and also worked for Good Run Research & Recreation, touching almost every CPG brand on the shelves along the way as well as dabbling in the automotive, healthcare, and political categories. My passion lies in storytelling, leading me to develop Immersion and Ideation Sessions for many of my clients where I could truly bring the research to life in a compelling way.
What is your teaching philosophy? Which classes will you be teaching this upcoming semester?
My teaching philosophy reflects my overall attitude towards almost everything in life: Give it 110 percent and don’t expect to get back more than what you put in. Having spent the last four years teaching as an adjunct in the Robertson School, I always tell my students I come with a life-time guarantee that extends beyond the classroom.
How do you keep current in this ever changing media environment?
I watch my 13-year-old son like a hawk and copy everything he does.
In all seriousness, it’s just about absorbing the behaviors that are going on around you with an open mind. Conversations will always happen – you just have to know where they are happening and when.
Tell us something personal about yourself. What hobbies and interests do you have outside of the classroom?
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Chris, and have a 13-year-old son named Zander. When I am not fully surrounded by testosterone, I am always training for something. A half marathon. A full marathon. A 30-day ab challenge. I keep busy because I have no cruise control. I am 0 or 130. And at 0, I hit full sloth mode. CSI Hulu marathon, anyone?
