Jeanine Guidry, Ph.D., is one of the newest professors in the School's public relations sequence. She will begin teaching courses this fall. Read her full bio here.
Where are you from and where did you work, or study, previously?
I was born in Amsterdam, raised near Maastricht, the Netherlands, where I finished my first master’s degree - MS in health sciences. Came to the U.S. for a year after graduating, then stayed another, then met my American husband…. I have worked in the nonprofit/humanitarian realm and still run a small nonprofit with my better half: Offering/Arts in the Alley. It’s a music and arts focused nonprofit - we play music for community events and community activities like the MCV pediatric ward, the Carytown Watermelon Festival, etc. We also paint community neighborhood murals where everyone can participate and no one has to have arts/painting/drawing experience.
What is your teaching philosophy? What classes will you be teaching this upcoming semester? What classes will you be teaching this upcoming semester?
My teaching philosophy is striking a balance between making sure students know the foundation and principles of the topic we are discussing, and at the same time making sure that these things are applied on a practical/societal level.
I'll be teaching MASC 336 (Social Media & PR) and MASC 672 (Strategic PR and Evauluation) this fall.
What is your research focus?
My research focuses on the role of social media and mobile technology in health, risk, and crisis communication; and on message development and testing in that area. Social media and mobile technology has profoundly changed how we (can) communicate, how health topics are discussed, and the ability to engage in real time with stakeholders, organizations, and publics. This holds both tremendous promise as well as great risk, and we don’t know near enough about these areas - which is why I am passionate to study this field.
What hobbies and interests do you have outside of the classroom?
Spending time with my husband and our two rescue dogs, Lola & Frodo; photography (I’m by no means a pro but love looking for new perspectives in everyday life).
