Student journalists from the Robertson School’s Mobile and Social Media Journalism capstone class covered the Midterm Elections in Virginia with breaking news reports last week. The reporters from the “iPadJournos” project interviewed senatorial and congressional candidates and published the following candidate profiles on the website of WTVR-CBS 6, the media partner of the project. Students used iPad reporting kits in the class to report multimedia news stories for digital and social media audiences.

On the morning of Election Day on Nov. 6, the students also reported from the polls in the competitive race in the 7th District of Virginia between Rep. Dave Brat and his challenger Abigail Spanberger. The district is located to the west of Richmond. Reporters interviewed voters in four counties and published their multimedia stories by midday, hours before the polls closed.
Later in the evening, some of the student reporters attended the election parties of Brat and Spanberger, while others helped with the election coverage in the newsroom of CBS 6. The students covered the elections results via social media and published additional stories the next morning.
The “iPadJournos” project has been a collaboration between Robertson School journalism professor Dr. Marcus Messner and Scott Wise, director of interactive media at CBS 6, since 2012.
