Joint statement by Dr. Marcus Messner, Director of the VCU Robertson School of Media and Culture, and Allison Bennett Dyche, Director of VCU Student Media:
"As an institution of higher education dedicated to student journalism, we are immensely proud of how the student reporters of The Commonwealth Times have provided live coverage of the ongoing protests of the Black Lives Matter movement in Richmond. At the same time, we are very concerned that two Commonwealth Times reporters were subjected to pepper spray by law enforcement while covering the protests. We urge law enforcement to exercise restraint and good sense in its interactions with members of The Commonwealth Times, other news media or anyone peaceably documenting these protests. We strongly believe that a civil society can only stand with a protected, free press that is able to report the news to the public from where it happens."
