The Robertson School is offering two award-winning classes this fall semester that will focus on the presidential election. If you’re following the current primary election races, you probably have an idea how exciting the fall campaign is going to be. So, get involved and consider taking these classes!

MASC 291 – VCU Votes Campaign: This class, which will be taught by Dr. Marcus Messner, is open to all majors and has no prerequisites. Students will develop an election campaign that helps VCU students to register to vote in Richmond, provide them information to make informed voting decisions and to turn out the vote on Election Day. This will involve a social media campaign as well as on-campus campaigning. At the same time students will learn how digital media have impacted political elections. In the 2012 presidential election and the 2013 gubernatorial election, students involved in this campaign were able to significantly increase voter turnout. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

MASC 496 – Mobile and Social Media Journalism (iPadJournos): This class, which will be taught by Dr. Marcus Messner and Vivian Medina-Messner, is open to journalism students who fulfill the prerequisites (MASC 303, 363 and 367). All print/online journalism students can take the class as one of their two capstones. Broadcast journalism students with bulletins of May 2013 and prior may also take it as their one capstone class. All other broadcast journalism students can take it as an elective. The class will cover the presidential race for the website of WTVR-CBS 6. Student reporters will be covering the topics of the election, interview candidates and supporters and will provide breaking news coverage with mobile technology on social media platforms. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

If you have any questions about these classes, please do not hesitate to the instructors. You can find your registration dates here.
