Mariam Alkazemi, Ph.D.

Mariam Alkazemi, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Robertson School's public relations sequence and coordinator for research and global initiatives.

Tell us a little bit about where you are from and where you worked or studied before joining the Robertson School?

Prior to my arrival at VCU, I was an assistant professor of mass communication at Gulf University for Science and Technology in Kuwait. I also was Carnegie Fellow at what is now the University of North Carolina Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies and a research fellow at the London School of Economics' Middle East Centre. I have been a research fellow at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and an adjunct professor and instructor of record at the University of Florida.

What's your favorite class to teach and why?

I really like to teach so many of my courses. I am enjoying "Professionalism," because it is one of those classes where each student needs to really try a number of new behaviors to see what fits best. I like seeing the individual students' growth and learning about what issues come up each semester. I like it for many reasons, including the fact that I can bring in many different professionals to the classroom.

Why should students come to the Robertson School?

The Robertson School is eclectic, and communication skills are very transferrable to whatever people like to talk about. If you want a chance to gain a number of skills and explore various topics, from reporting on politics to learning to make webpages, you will find in our school a diverse set of experiences and people dedicated to see you grow and succeed.

How do you keep current in this ever changing media environment?

I go to conferences, take classes and work on various research projects to learn and grow as a person. I also like to connect with people I can learn from and I enjoy reading very much.

Which area do you focus on in your scholarship?

My focus is in international communication. Specifically, I have tried to focus on the Arab media particularly in the Arab Gulf states. However, I am also interested in a wider range of political and religious communication.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I run a writer's group on weekends. I love taking walks outside, especially with my dog, Dr. Chelsea. Traveling and cooking bring me joy.
