During winter break, Robertson School Associate Director Dr. Marcus Messner gave a four-day lecture series at the Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in Nanchang, China. He taught around 50 journalism students in the Department of Journalism at the university.
Messner gave an overview on social media journalism in the United States as well as compared the American and European media systems. At the end of the lecture series the students discussed international media policies.
"In our globalized world, it is important to have exchanges likes these to discuss the future of media and the differences in our media systems," said Messner. "I am very grateful for the opportunity to speak to the students and professors at the Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, who were very interested to learn more about social media in the U.S. I hope that we will have a continuous exchange between our two universities."
Messner was invited to the university in the Jiangxi province in Southeast China by Professors Shujun Luo and Yubin Wang, who had been global visiting scholars at the Robertson School in 2015 and 2016 and had visited VCU with their students in the summer of 2017.
