Congratulations to our Award Winners

Creative Advertising Outstanding Student Award

  • Emma Hultgren
Hultgren makes an effort to help her peers and pushes herself to go above and behind many of the students. Her work is professional, creative and mission driven. She has passion to work on environmental and Native American issues and her work is always top in class and other students respect her opinion. Hultgren is a strong creative problem solver with a great eye for design and visual solutions while setting a very high bar for herself and is always open to learning more. She is a part-time creative manager for reRVA Real Estate, a position she started as an intern. She completed internships with the Richmond Symphony, VCU Admissions Office, The Martin Agency, Rebuilding Together Richmond, and CreativeMktGroup. Hulgren has plans to graduate Summa Cum Laude as a Creative and Strategic major and a minor in Product Innovation.

Strategic Advertising Outstanding Student Award

  • Michelle Mead
Mead is described as the hardest worker by peers. Thoughtful, fun, insightful and reliable. The first time she presented a simple introduction in Awareness class, her instructor instantly knew she was a strategist. The energy and creative mind she brings to strategy brings her work to life. She is insightful, meticulous, and continually in pursuit of her own growth and excellent work. She’s Vice President of the Advertising Club at VCU. Mead is a winner of the Barbara Fultz Women in Advertising Scholarship and the Creative Brief Competition in the One Show Strategy Workshop. She is a Marketing Intern and Strategic Team Leader with CreateAthon an advertising event held by the Robertson School. She’s also a marketing administrator (running social media) for Chop Chop RVA. She has plans to graduate Magna Cum Laude as a Creative and Strategic major.

Broadcast Journalism Outstanding Student Award

  • Ben Malakoff
After joining WVCW Radio his freshman year, Ben Malakoff became one of the stations main play-by-play broadcasters for men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Before his sophomore year, he was hired as the station’s sports director. The position helped him land an internship with WJLA ABC-7. For the past two years leading up to graduation, he has worked as the General Manager of WVCW where he runs both the broadcast and business side of the radio station. Aside from his work with radio, he has been an anchor and reporter for VCU insight during his senior year. He has also contracted for VCU athletics as a play-by-play broadcaster on ESPN+.

Print-Online Journalism Outstanding Student Award

  • David Tran
David Tran is a first generation college student and the first in his family to attend college. During his time at the Robertson School, he shined light on  environmental and social issues across Virginia and was published in numerous news outlets, such as the Associated Press and the Washington Post. He plans to pursue a career in journalism after graduation, hopefully to tell stories and highlight issues marginalized communities face.

Public Relations Outstanding Student Award

Josie Stone Award

  • Matthew Tessema

The  journalism faculty is proud to nominate Matthew Tessema for the 2021 Josie Stone Award. A first generation college student whose parents moved to the U.S. from Ethiopia, Matthew will graduate from the Robertson School as one of the top performing students in the journalism concentration. His 3.89 GPA is even more impressive considering his intense workload, which at times required him to balance three part-time jobs. Matthew was selected for the highly competitive Fulbright UK Summer Institutes in 2020, and he is the founder of the pre-law society at VCU, which now has over 250 members. His professionalism, determination, and composure made a lasting impression on his professors. In the spirit of Josie Stone, he carved his own path–and we are excited to see where it takes him.

When asked to reflect on his experience at the Robertson School, Matthew had this to say: “Through my three years as a Robertson student I worked with professors that were dedicated to my progression as a writer and journalist. I noticed that particularly in my journalism classes my teachers have been as invested in my success just as much as me. And I credit those instructors for a life-changing experience at VCU. There were times I balanced three part-time jobs and a full course load and my professors always worked with me. The skills learned in our classrooms have helped me become a Fulbright scholar, start a club at the university and intern with the congressional black caucus foundation. I am proud to say that I will soon be a summa cum laude graduate of the Robertson School.”
