The Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University is excited to announce the launch of the Kirk Laughlin Robertson School Internship Fund.

 

Program Overview

The Kirk Laughlin Robertson School Internship Fund is the first internship program of its kind, established by VCU Robertson School alumnus and media entrepreneur Kirk Laughlin, to build a bridge between the Robertson School and the East Coast media mecca, New York City.

 

Offered exclusively to VCU Robertson School undergraduate students, the two selected student winners will be awarded a $5,000 stipend to complete a six to eight-week internship program in New York City during the 2017 summer semester at a designated media company chosen by the Robertson School.

 

Application Criteria, Deadlines & Stipend Support

 

Criteria & Deadline

 

The Kirk Laughlin Robertson School Internship opportunity is open to current and/or rising juniors and seniors in the journalism undergraduate program of the VCU Robertson School. Experience with video capabilities is a plus.

 

All applications must be submitted by March 31, 2017 through the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences’ online academic works system.

 

The following must be submitted on the online application system:

  1. Two letters of recommendation from a professor(s) and/or a non-affiliate VCU person(s) with an emphasis describing the student applicant’s character.
  2. An essay (no more than 500 words) detailing why the applicant wants to complete an internship in New York City; how the applicant is driven toward pursuing a career in digital storytelling/online business journalism; and describing any videography experience.

 

Final placement of the intern is subject to review by the media group hosting the internship.

 

The selected students will be notified by the School and required to sign an acceptance form that must be returned no later than April 24, 2017 to Lauren Stewart, assistant director for development and alumni relations, at the VCU Temple Building, located at 901 W. Main St., room 2208- E.

 

Use of Stipend

The awarded $5,000 stipend is to be used for covering the following expenses:

  1. Cost of living accommodations
  2. Cost of travel from VCU to New York City
  3. Transportation costs to and from the internship while in New York City
  4. Food and other cost of living expenses

 

The $5,000 stipend is to be used for covering the students’ cost of living and travel expenses (as noted above). However, the students are responsible for determining where they will be living in New York City throughout the duration of the internship program and securing these arrangements. The School will provide the selected students a list of prescreened and affordable housing options with contact information for the students to follow as guide when arranging their living accommodations.

 

Additional Support:

The School will provide opportunities for the selected students to connect with fellow VCU alumni who are currently living and working in the New York City area for additional support.

 

Maggie McDearmon, the School’s career development adviser, will be available throughout the duration of the internship program to answer student questions and/or provide additional support regarding the internship process.
